Dental Implants |
|
Dental Implants
are the healthiest most natural alternative for replacement of missing
teeth. Implants feel and function exactly like healthy natural teeth.
They promote bone growth and prevent the progressive loss of bone
that occurs when teeth are lost.
Implants are metal posts
that are surgically placed into the jaw bone. They form an extremely
strong bond with the bone. Implants support the construction of
artificial teeth with individual crowns, bridges or dentures.

Dental Implants:
The Ultimate
Recommendation for Tooth Replacement |
| |
|
| |
Patients who are missing
one or many teeth will loose the bone in their jaw unless the missing
teeth are replaced with dental implants. Without tooth replacement,
the progression of bone loss can affect speech, the ability to chew,
and facial appearance. It can also lead to improper fit of dentures
and even fractures in the jaw. Dental implants are the healthiest,
long term tooth replacement alternative.
Traditional tooth replacement with bridgework will
address the functional and cosmetic problem associated with missing
teeth. However, bridges require that two or more teeth serve as
support to replace the missing teeth. This requires placing crowns
on the adjacent natural teeth that may be perfectly healthy and
would not otherwise require crowns. Bridgework does nothing to stop
the continued progression of bone loss beneath the pontic tooth.
Implants are the only proven way to prevent bone loss after the
natural teeth have been extracted. |

| Dental
implants are the most natural way to replace teeth and provide
a healthy, beautiful smile. Implants function in a very similar
way to natural teeth by stimulating the bone in the jaw and
promoting bone regrowth and remodeling. |

ASK
THE
DOCTOR: Common
Questions
About Implant
Dentistry |
|
|
| |
|
| |
Q.
Is implant placement painful?
A. No, the procedure
is usually done under local anesthesia. Sedation is usually recommended
so that patients are completely comfortable during the procedure.
Patients often report the procedure Dr. Toni Mascherin itself and
the healing process to be easier and more comfortable than having
a tooth extracted.
Q. What can I eat after having an
implant placed?
A. Dr.
Mascherin will outline a diet for the next few weeks that will include
softer foods.
Q. How long does implant placement,
healing and construction of the replacement teeth take?
A. The entire process
can take from 3 to 9 months, depending on your unique needs.
Q. How long does
an implant last?
A. It should last
many years if cared for properly. Many implants have been in place
for more than 30 years. We expect most implants to last a lifetime
provided the patient is faithful with regular professional preventive
care and is diligent in cleaning and maintaining the implants at
home.
Q. Are dental implants
covered by insurance?
A. Dental
implants maybe covered to some degree by your dental insurance plan.
Dr. Mascherin’s business team can help investigate your insurance
coverage.

Invisalign Invisable
Braces
|
| |
Now it is possible
to straighten teeth without having to wear unsightly metal braces!
Using three dimensional computer technology, a series of clear Invisalign
aligners are fabricated. The aligners are changed out every two
weeks until the teeth are suitably straightened and the bite corrected.
Invisalign is appropriate for both adolescents and adults. Patients
wearing aligners can speak and function with ease. The aligners
are highly cosmetic, in fact “invisible.” The aligners
are worn 24 hours a day until treatment is completed. They are removed
when eating, for periodic professional cleanings and for daily brushing
and flossing. Since the aligners can be removed for cleaning purposes,
patients are better able to maintain optimal dental and periodontal
health during their orthodontic care. |

Using the latest advancements
in porcelain technology, Dr. Mascherin can beautify your smile with
porcelain veneers. If your teeth are extremely discolored, chipped,
broken or uneven, porcelain veneers can dramatically improve your
smile. Porcelain veneers can also be used to cosmetically straighten
teeth, close spaces, or to enhance tooth color and shape. |

A crown or “cap”
is needed when a tooth is badly fractured or decayed. Recent advances
in porcelain technology have provided materials that are not only
highly esthetic, but are quite strong and durable. Cosmetic crowns
can not only repair badly damaged teeth, but they can be used to
cosmetically straighten teeth and cover discolorations. |

Cosmetic Inlays and Onlays
|

Teeth that have fractured
or have unsightly silver fillings can be beautifully repaired with
tooth colored onlays. Cosmetic onlays restore strength to weakened
molars and bicuspids. They blend into the natural colors of the
tooth and are highly cosmetic. |

Cosmetic “Tooth-Colored”
Fillings
|
| |
For centuries, silver
fillings (amalgams) were used to repair decayed or fractured teeth.
Today, patients can enjoy the benefits of “tooth-colored”
fillings (composite resins). Advances in composites provide beautiful
tooth colored fillings that are as strong as metal fillings, are
healthier for your teeth and are virtually undetectable. |

Tooth whitening is
a process that actually lightens the internal pigmentation of the
teeth. It is an extremely safe procedure and its effects last for
many years. One common side effect of whitening is sensitivity of
the teeth and/or gums. The sensitivity generally lasts no more than
one to two days and is completely reversible. |

If you are missing
one or more teeth, a bridge is an alternative for tooth replacement.
Bridgework involves crowning two or more teeth and connecting the
two crowns with a false tooth. Bridges are cemented firmly onto
the crowned teeth and function just like natural teeth. They are
made of porcelain materials and are highly esthetic. |

"ViziLite Oral
Cancer Screening" Dr. Mascherin offers ViziLite,
the latest technology for oral cancer screening. ViziLite greatly
enhances our ability to identify and evaluate cancerous lesions
at the earliest possible stage. Early detection of precancerous
lesions is the best protection against cancer that the medical community
can offer.
Statistics published by the American Cancer Society show that one
American dies every hour from oral cancer. People above the age
of 18 are particularly at risk. It was once believed that only tobacco
users and alcohol consumers were at risk for oral cancer. Oddly
enough, more than 25% of oral cancer victims have no such lifestyle
risks factors.
|
| |
 |
| |
If left untreated, oral cancer can greatly
compromise a patient’s quality of life, and ultimately lead
to death. Surgeries to remove oral cancer can be highly disfiguring,
and can greatly compromise a person's ability to function normally.
This is why it is so important to detect and diagnose oral cancer
at its earliest stage. If detected early, 90% of oral cancer cases
are completely curable. |

Dr. Mascherin has incorporated annual ViziLite
oral cancer screenings with her standard of care for patients 18 years
or older. The procedure is simple, painless and non-invasive. For

Gum Disease Therapy and
Prevention
|
| |
Periodontal (gum) disease
is a prime cause of tooth loss in the United States today. In fact,
80% of the adult population exhibits some form of periodontal disease.
There are often no warning signs of gum disease and it can take
a period of months or even years for symptoms to develop. Common
symptoms include bleeding, red or swollen gums, pain, loose teeth
and bad breath. Aggressive intervention, followed by regular examinations
and cleaning appointments are recommended to help fight gum disease.
Many new treatments are available to help patients avoid tooth loss
due to periodontal disease. These include ultrasonic cleanings,
placement of antibiotic agents into infected sites, and gum surgery. |

If you have lost your
natural teeth from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, a complete
denture will provide a beautiful smile, allow you to chew your food
and speak more naturally. To improve the stability of your denture,
it is best to have some dental implants placed to help support your
denture. Dental implants enhance the health and stability of your
gums and bone, and will promote bone growth. Implants supporting
a denture will prevent the progressive loss of bone that occurs
when patients have worn dentures for many years. |
